This Assay Medal refers to the recent election of U.S. Grant as President. The obverse of this medal displays Columbia, sitting and wearing a draped cloth as she rests her hand on an American shield. Behind her stands a pole with the liberty cap resting atop it. The reverse displays a laurel wreath with the words, “Let us have peace” on the scroll at the top of the wreath.
