This Assay Medal refers to the recent election of U.S. Grant as President. The obverse of this medal displays Columbia sitting and wearing a draped cloth as she rests her hand on an American shield. Behind her stands a pole with the liberty cap resting atop it. Around the figure are thirteen stars. The reverse displays a laurel wreath with the words, “Let us have peace” on the scroll at the top of the wreath. Inside the wreath is the inscription, “Annual Assay 1869.” According to records, the starred medals were cracked and more of the un-starred medals were made as a replacement.
