Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Seated design debuted on the half dime and dime in 1837 and continued through 1873. The type runs through several sub-types: No Stars (1837–1838), Stars on the obverse (1838–1859), Arrows at the date (1853–1855, marking a weight reduction), and finally Legend on the obverse (1860–1873).

Key facts

Mintages after 1862 were generally low as the coins vanished from circulation during the Civil War. The series holds many rarities, especially among New Orleans coins and the late dates. Landmark issues include the 1838-O No Stars, the rare Philadelphia 1846, the 1853-O No Arrows, and the unique 1870-S — a single known example and one of the great rarities of American numismatics.
