The 1858 Flying Eagle cent comes in two main obverse varieties — Large Letters and Small Letters — distinguished by the size and spacing of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The Large Letters variety is common in circulated grades and available in Mint State with some searching. 1858 was the final year of the design, which was discontinued because the eagle’s head and tail would not strike up sharply against the heavy reverse wreath.
