History, Information, and Value of 1847 Braided Hair Half Cent

Value of 1847 C-PO-8 Braided Hair Half Cent

W-1 | Original, Large Berries, Proof | C-PO-8, B-1a | Breen dies: 1-A. | Only 20 to 25 examples of 1847 Braided Hair Half Cent W-1 are thought to exist. The obverse die was used for all three issues, originals and restrikes, of the date. On this issue, and the following 1847, the date seems larger than usual and appears crowded in the field below Liberty.

Value of 1847 C-SR-9 Braided Hair Half Cent

W-2 | First Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-9, B-2 | Breen dies: 1-B. | Exceedingly rare with perhaps just three or four specimens extant. W-2 for the year is considered to be perhaps the rarest of any of the Proof half cents issues of the decade. Walter Breen knew of just three specimens decades ago, and the known population has not increased substantially since then. Breen wrote: “It is still the rarest of all die combinations among the Proof-only dates, being rarer than the 1831 or 1836 with Small Berries or 1852 with Large Berries.”

Value of 1847 C-SR-24 Braided Hair Half Cent

W-3 | Second Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-24, B-3 | Breen dies: 1-C. | Not quite as rare as the other two varieties of the date, W-3 has a suggested population of 30 to 40 pieces, still rare by most standards. Some come on heavier planchets than usual as in the preceding years, and all have the diagonal die lines above RICA on the reverse, diagnostic for Second Restrikes.

The obverse text of the Braided Hair Half Cent reads “Liberty, 1847.” The reverse of the coins read “United States of America, Half Cent.”
