History, Information, and Value of 1844 Braided Hair Half Cent

Value of 1844 C-PO-5 Braided Hair Half Cent

W-1 | Original, Large Berries, Proof | C-PO-5, B-1 | Breen dies: 1-A. | Perhaps 19 to 24 or so examples of this 1844 Braided Hair Half Cent rarity are extant. As with all the original Proof half cents of the era, the production tally was very small for 1844, hence the shortfall of known specimens today.

Value of 1844 C-SR-6 Braided Hair Half Cent

W-2 | First Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-6, B-2 | Breen dies: 1-B. | The scarcest of the three varieties of the year, the First Restrike is known by some seven to nine or so examples today. Same obverse as W-1, slight doubling at NT in CENT on the reverse.

Value of 1844 C-SR-21 Braided Hair Half Cent

W-3 | Second Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-21, B-3 | Breen dies: 1-C. | Perhaps 14 to 17 or so examples of W-3 are known today. As with all the Second Restrike half cents of 1840 to 1849, certain of the pieces were struck on heavier than usual planchets weighing 96.1 grains — perhaps this heavy planchet stock was all the Mint could muster on short notice during this period, 1859 or later, in the half cent Restrike game. Same obverse as W-1 and 2, reverse with die lines in the field above RICA.

The obverse text of the Braided Hair Half Cent reads “Liberty, 1844.” The reverse of the coins read “United States of America, Half Cent.”
