The Draped Bust half dime followed Gilbert Stuart’s portrait first used on the 1795 silver dollar. Two reverses were used: a Small Eagle (1796–1797) and a Heraldic Eagle (1800–1805). No half dimes were struck in 1798, 1799, or 1804.

The type is difficult to find choice: the small planchets struck unevenly, most survivors are Very Fine or lower, and only about one in ten is Mint State. Notable issues include the first-year 1796 (with the 1796/5 overdate and the LIKERTY blunder), the 1800 (including the LIBEKTY variety), and the rare 1802, one of the most famous rarities in the entire half dime series. After 1805 the denomination was suspended for 24 years.
