Coinage of half dimes resumed in 1829 with the Capped Bust design, adapted by Mint engraver William Kneass from John Reich’s earlier work. The obverse shows Liberty in a cloth cap inscribed LIBERTY; the reverse carries a shield-breasted eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM and, for the first time on the denomination, the mark of value 5 C.

The series contains no rare dates — though some individual die varieties are elusive — so the type is readily collected from Very Good through Extremely Fine, with Gem Uncirculated coins being the challenge. Most issues are well struck. The first-year 1829 and the final-year 1837 (with Small and Large 5 C. varieties) are the natural bookends of the type.
