The Barber half dollar, designed by Charles E. Barber, debuted in 1892 and shares its Liberty Head obverse with the Barber dime and quarter. The obverse shows Liberty facing right in a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath with stars and IN GOD WE TRUST; the reverse carries a heraldic eagle adapted from the Great Seal of the United States.

Coins were struck continuously at Philadelphia and San Francisco from 1892 through 1915, with New Orleans and Denver contributing in many years. Type collectors find Good and Very Good coins easily, but — as with Barber dimes and quarters — the word LIBERTY wears off quickly, so Fine through Extremely Fine coins are much scarcer than catalog prices suggest, and Mint State pieces are genuinely rare.
Key dates include the first-year 1892-O and 1892-S, the 1893-S, 1897-O and 1897-S, the 1904-S, and the low-mintage Proof-era 1914 and 1915.
