History, Information, and Value of 1927-S Peace Dollar
Value of 1927 San Francisco Mint Peace Silver Dollar
Poor strike quality is typical for the 1927-S silver Peace dollar. Luster is average for these coins. As expected for the low mintage, Uncirculated and high-quality coins are rare. This is the second of four regular-issue dates in the series with a mintage of fewer than one million coins. Only relatively few examples have been graded MS-65, and MS-66 pieces are extremely rare; neither major third-party grading service has recorded a MS-67 example of the date. Some years ago Dave Bowers did a study of this for his weekly column in Coin World. Studying the huge price gap between MS-64 and MS-65, and studying many certified coins in these grades, he found that more than just a few MS-64 coins were nicer than those graded MS-65. This is one variety for which cherrypicking will pay rich dividends. Per Dave, a beautiful MS-63 coin is more worthwhile to own than an unattractive MS-65 — and think of all the money you will save!
1927-S Peace Dollars Are Scarce As 40s-58s: This low-mintage key date is available in EF and AU but only on occasion. Finding a choice circulated example of the date can prove as difficult as finding a choice Uncirculated coin.
Be Patient When Buying An MS 1927-S Silver Dollar: Always available to those with patience, the ideal grade for this scarcity is MS-63 to MS-64. In MS-65 the date presents a great challenge, and only a very few MS-66 examples exist; those may already be in advanced Peace dollar collections. Look for a solid strike, as always, but also look for lively luster as this date can be somewhat flat in that department.
The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1927.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace; S.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.
