History, Information, and Value of 1897 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1897-O Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1897-O Morgan Silver Dollar is a variety that cries out for cherrypicking. While most are poorly or lightly struck with below-par luster, specimens can be found with relatively crisp devices and lively luster though these are few and far between. No proof versions of this $1 coin were produced at the New Orleans mint.

Always a Cheap Pick Up in Circulated Grades: Always available in EF and AU, with little attention paid to lesser grades.

UNCs Prove to be More Scarce Than Circulated Counterpart: Bag quantities of the date were available from time to time in the 1940s and 1950s. In today’s market locating a Mint State-63 coin with good luster, minimal bagmarks, and better than typical strike will provide a challenge-and will be worth it. MS-64 and finer coins are scarce.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1897.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; O.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
