In 1864 the Indian Head cent changed from the hard copper-nickel alloy to a thinner bronze planchet, and late that year Mint engraver James B. Longacre added a tiny “L” — his initial — to the ribbon beneath the Indian Princess’s ribbon on the obverse. Only a few million were struck with the distinctive “L,” several times scarcer than the no-L bronze issue, and the variety is prized by collectors today. Look for the “L” on the lower ribbon; genuine examples command a strong premium, especially with full detail on the initial.
