The strike is usually sharp on examples of the issue, though overall eye appeal tends to be a more important factor in judging quality as most pieces are very worn. With an estimated 35 examples known in all grades, the 1854-O is a true rarity. The majority of survivors are distributed throughout the Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades, with perhaps a dozen About Uncirculated coins to represent the finest of the issue. The fact that the mintage was so tiny, and that the coin is from New Orleans, make this a highly desirable coin.
