Value of 1599 The Capture of Saint Thomas Medal

This medal commemorates the successful capture of St. Thomas by Admiral Van der Doz. It features mythology and a bust of the Prince of Orange. Obverse is pictured Maurice, facing to the right and his full name, “Prince of Orange, Count of Nassau and Katzenellenbogen, Marquis of Vere and Flessingen, Count of Frisia and Moers” encircled by a dainty circle of dots. The reverse displays a nude Fortuna, holding a sail moving in the wind, as she stands on a globe in the sea. Behind the figure of Fortuna is Neptune in his chariot; both figures are facing away from a flaming city. The commemorative piece celebrates the capture of St. Thomas from the Spanish with all credit due to Maurice, Prince of Orange who planned the expedition and capture.
