History, Information, and Value of 1871 Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation Medal
Value of 1871 Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation Medal
This medal commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation. The obverse displays a bust of President Lincoln, facing to the right. The legend reads, “ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENT UNITED STATES; BARBER.” The reverse lacks an image but reads, “MARCH 4, 1861 TO APRIL 15, 1865. EMANCIPATION PROCLAIMED JAN. 1 1863; MEDAL SERIES OF THE U.S. MINT 1871 J. POLLOCK DIRECTOR.” Only one gold medal was struck, and that medal was given to the Pennsylvania National Guard in December of 1871.
